Thumbnail preview

Preview the decision surface, then record the visible problem.

A thumbnail preview is most useful when it gives you a specific visual decision. Do not just ask whether the mockup looks good; write down what stays visible, what disappears, and the one element you will change before you preview again.

Placement changes attention

A home feed, sidebar, and search-style result do not give the image the same space. Inspect the focal point in each placement.

Small view exposes priorities

When the thumbnail is reduced, only the strongest visual signal survives. Use that smaller view to find the part that needs simplification.

A preview is a review, not a prediction

A realistic layout can reveal a crop or title issue. It cannot measure how a future audience will respond.

A thumbnail preview observation log

Use the same short note after every preview. This avoids changing several things at once and then losing track of what the preview actually revealed.

  1. Placement: name the view you are judging—home feed, sidebar, or search result.
  2. First visible signal: note the subject, shape, color block, or image text that you notice before reading the title.
  3. Title relationship: note whether the title adds a distinct idea or repeats what the image already says.
  4. Small-view failure: write one thing that becomes unclear when the image is reduced, such as a cropped face, weak contrast, or tiny image text.
  5. Next revision: choose one change only, then make a new preview and compare the same placement again.

Make a local thumbnail preview

Thumbnail Inspector lets you select one image and enter a working title without an account. The preview runs in your browser and places the same image in a home feed, watch sidebar, and search-result layout. It also shows image resolution, aspect ratio, and a luminance-range contrast cue.

Use those file facts to support the visual review, not to replace it. Text readability remains something you should inspect with your own eyes at the smaller preview size.

Thumbnail preview FAQ

Does a thumbnail preview use my YouTube account?

No. This site uses a local mockup. It does not ask for a YouTube login or fetch a channel.

Can I preview a thumbnail with a title?

Yes. Add a working title with the image so you can inspect how they read together in each layout.

What should I do when a preview looks crowded?

Record the single visible issue, revise one element, and compare the new image in the same placement before making another change.

Does a good preview guarantee performance?

No. A preview is for visible packaging decisions before publication; it does not measure viewer behavior.
