A thumbnail preview can show whether your image and title survive a real-looking layout. A live A/B test can show how viewers react after publication. They answer different questions, so one cannot replace the other.
Before publishing: preview
Use a preview to inspect placement, title wrapping, aspect ratio, contrast, and whether small image text remains readable. These are visible design checks.
After publishing: live test
Use a platform test when you need evidence of a viewer response between published alternatives. That evidence cannot be created by a mockup alone.
Do not confuse the result
A clean preview is not a prediction of clicks. A platform result is not a substitute for checking whether a title is cut off or the image is hard to read.
A practical thumbnail test sequence
- Start with the placement. Put the image and its working title into home-feed, sidebar, and search-result views.
- Name the one change you are testing. For example, change the face crop or rewrite the title, but do not change every element at once.
- Keep a visual record before publication. Note where the title wraps, whether the focal point survives at a small size, and whether the contrast is still clear.
- Use a live A/B test only for the published alternatives. Compare the alternatives there after the design review is complete.
